Poker History

The history of Poker is not easy to detect the who, when and how. It is difficult to say exactly from who the game of poker begun. It was during the year 1829 where Joseph Crowell describes this game but it was Jonathan Green who first called the game "Poker" in the year 1843.

We can put it this way, it was Crowell who actually referenced the game of poker, but it was actually Green who had given it the name "Poker".

There are other popular theories about the history of poker and here are the following theories:

1. The English Theory

The game that is called the "Brag" or "Bragg" can be one of the ancestors of poker, since this is the time where English Bragg incorporated this game with bluffing.

2. The Chinese Theory

Emperor Mu-tsung along with his wife were playing a game that became "poker" from their game of "domino cards".

3. The French Theory

Residents from New Orleans in the year 1480 were playing the game that was popularly known as "Poque". This is the first game that was considered to be using a deck of cards with four designs, the diamonds, hearts, spades and clubs.

4. The Indian Theory

Their first game of poker was called "Ganjifa".

5. The German Theory

One gambler said "Ich Poche" while he rapped on the game table. This gave life to the word "pochspiel".

6. The Persian Theory

This game came from a Persian sailor to New Orleans. The game was known for the name of "As nas". This game used a deck of cards with 5 different designs.

The first four suits that were used in Europe were the following: Cups, Polo Sticks, Swords and Coins. This game was then called the "Marmeluke" those were in the 1300's.

While in the 1400's in Germany the four popular suits are the following: Acorns, Hearts, Leaves and Bells.

Over the past years there are many other different suits that they use. Like in Switzerland, they use the following: Acorns, Shields, Bells and Roses.

Soon after so many suits and designs, they settled for the most popular suits that we are actually using now: Clubs, Spades, Diamonds and Hearts.

So it is probably best to say that a lot of little things from everything have brought the existence of poker. Each theory gave something to this great card game. From the good old days, poker has developed and improved over the years.
